Microsoft Dev Box pricing

Secure, cloud-based workstations built for dev productivity.

Microsoft Dev Box pricing includes two parts:

1) User licensing:

To use Microsoft Dev Box, each user must be licensed for Windows 11 Enterprise or Windows 10 Enterprise, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, and Azure Active Directory P1.

In addition to being available independently, these licenses are included in Microsoft 365 F3, Microsoft 365 E3, Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 A3, Microsoft 365 A5, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and Microsoft 365 Education Student Use Benefit subscriptions.

Microsoft Dev Box is used to design, develop, and test applications.

2) Pricing:

Microsoft Dev Box pricing provides monthly and hourly pricing options per dev box instance and includes everything you need to provide dev workstations in the cloud.

Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes. Actual pricing may vary depending on the type of agreement entered with Microsoft, date of purchase, and the currency exchange rate. Prices are calculated based on US dollars and converted using London closing spot rates that are captured in the two business days prior to the last business day of the previous month end. If the two business days prior to the end of the month fall on a bank holiday in major markets, the rate setting day is generally the day immediately preceding the two business days. This rate applies to all transactions during the upcoming month. Sign in to the Azure pricing calculator to see pricing based on your current program/offer with Microsoft. Dev Box enables you to pay a predictable monthly price per Dev Box instance for unlimited usage of that instance during a billing month.

For flexible usage, pay as you go up to the max monthly price based on the configuration of the Dev Box instance. When a Dev Box is created, you pay a monthly storage fee until the Dev Box is deleted and pay a compute rate for each hour of active usage during the month. When a Dev Box's total cost (including its monthly storage and hourly compute) reaches the level of the max monthly price of that instance for that month, billing will automatically stop for that Dev Box instance.

Take advantage of the predictable max monthly price per Dev Box that automatically applies for scenarios that require higher utilization, and hourly pricing for scenarios that require flexibility to optimize your costs.

  • The max monthly price per instance applies when usage for a particular instance would increase costs above that maximum price for the month. The service will automatically switch between the hourly price and the max monthly price, so you do not have to worry about managing usage and will get the best price per instance based on your usage.
  • Active usage is defined as when the Dev Box is a running state.
  • No, hibernated Dev Boxes are not considered running and will not accrue to compute charges.
  • Storage pricing is billed from when a Dev Box is created to when it is removed. This includes time when the Dev Box is not running.
  • No storage charges are prorated per hour based on usage. If you delete a Dev Box, you will be billed based on the amount of hours of usage in that billing month.
  • Developers may use multiple Dev Boxes, and each Dev Box instance will have a separate max price based on its SKU and will be charged according to usage.
  • To use Microsoft Dev Box, each user must be licensed for Windows 11 Enterprise or Windows 10 Enterprise, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, and Azure Active Directory P1.
